NICEIC’s Jobs for the Girls campaign challenges electrician gender stereotypes

14 September 2016

Here at ProActive Electrical, we are happy to play our own part in encouraging women to enter the electrical industry, and very much approve of NICEIC's efforts to dispel many of the persistent gender and other stereotypes relating to the sector.

As sad a phenomenon as it is for us to have to recognise, the world of electrical work is by no means free from stereotypes concerning the kind of person who would, or should, work in the trade. Certainly, many an electrician in Garston and other areas of the UK will know about the gender stereotypes that may deter many women from becoming electricians.

This is exactly why the leading voluntary regulatory body for the electrical contracting industry, NICEIC, launched its Jobs for the Girls campaign in 2011, which encouraged more women to enter the electrical industry. However, while more women have certainly joined the sector in recent times, it remains the case that only one in every 1,000 electrical contractors is female.

Working for an equal future

We have good reason to be familiar with the work of NICEIC here at ProActive Electrical, as all of our work is carried out and certificated under the regulatory body’s scheme. Only electrical contractors of the highest calibre pass NICEIC’s rigorous assessments, so it makes sense for the body to take a similarly hands-on and fastidious approach to the persistent problem of the lack of women in the current electrical industry.

Indeed, the body also recently undertook a survey of male electricians, finding that three-quarters of them would be very happy for their daughters to pursue a career as an electrician. However, many of them also believed that the old-fashioned attitudes still present in the trade would discourage their daughters from actually training as an electrician.
