Is PAT testing required at your business?

02 July 2015

Find out what you need to know about PAT Testing.

There can be few more important things for any commercial space than the utmost standards of health and safety – and there are few more important things for any company’s health and safety policy than the right portable appliance testing, or PAT. That’s why the latter is such a key service of ours here at ProActive Commercial Maintenance.

PAT testing involves the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure that they are safe to use. Although only a visual inspection will be necessary to detect many electrical safety defects, others can only be discovered by testing. However, a test alone may also be insufficient, showing that both aspects are vital if you are to ensure the ultimate safety of your workplaces’ electrical equipment and appliances.

The formal PAT testing that we can provide here at ProActive CM goes beyond the kind of brief check that you could carry out yourself with some modest training. Our inspection and testing service is conducted by a suitably competent person.

Many business owners presume that they need to have the electrical appliances and equipment in their workplace tested once a year, but there’s no specific legal need to do this. Instead, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 are more general in requiring the maintenance in a safe condition of any electrical equipment that has the potential to cause injury.

This means, in practice, that many do have their electrical equipment tested annually, although the most suitable frequency depends on the exact equipment and the environment in which it is used. Our PAT testing professionals can give more tailored advice on the most appropriate testing intervals for your own workplace, if you so wish.

Many people don’t realise just how different the legal reality is from widespread perceptions. PAT testing in itself, for instance, is not compulsory, but the law still demands that electrical equipment is maintained in a way that prevents danger – without any given method or frequency being stated.

Nonetheless, PAT testing can play a big role in helping your business to fulfil its legal obligations with regard to electrical equipment health and safety. Get in touch with ProActive CM today to learn more about our own PAT testing service and how we can assist you in meeting your moral and legal duty to keep everyone who uses your workplace safe.
